Nearby Tarpon Springs is probably best-known for its large Greek community – the city has the largest percentage of Greek Americans of any US city. The large population can be traced to John Cocoris, who introduced sponge diving in Tarpon Springs back in 1905. He recruited divers and crew members from the Greek islands of Aegina and Hydra. It quickly became one of the most important businesses in Tarpon Springs, even spurring a movie – Beneath the 12-Mile Reef, released in 1953.

Another great destination is Anclote Key. This tiny island is located off the coast of Tarpon Springs and is home to mangrove wetlands, gorgeous beaches, and a variety of birds. Anclote Key Preserve State Park is only accessible by boat, but it is well worth the trip. The highlight of the park is a historic lighthouse. The Anclote Keys lighthouse was built in 1887.
