Stephen Foster is a large neighborhood located approximately two miles north of Downtown Gainesville, Florida. Stephen Foster has a mixture of both residential and commercial properties. Stephen Foster is bordered by Northwest 39th Avenue to the north, Northwest 13th Street on the west, Northwest 23rd Avenue to the south, and Northwest 6th Street on the east. A small portion of the neighborhood extends past Northwest 6th Street on the eastern border.
Mt. Pleasant Cemetery is situated on the western border of Stephen Foster, just south of Northwest 30th Avenue. South of the cemetery just off Northwest 13th Street are Sam’s Club and Walmart. This area along Northwest 13th Street offers many shopping and dining venues. Northside Shopping Center is only a few minutes’ drive southeast. Many of the residential areas are in the northern and most southern portions of the neighborhood.
Stephen Foster is located in the 32609 zip code of Alachua County. Public schools include Stephen Foster Elementary, Howard W. Bishop Middle, and Gainesville High. The University of Florida is approximately two miles south-southwest of the neighborhood.
A few miles to the east of Stephen Foster are Ironwood Golf Course, Gainesville Regional Airport and Morningside Nature Center. The nature center offers recreational activities and is a living farm that shows visitors what life was like living on a Florida homestead during 1870. Children can help feed the farm animals or watch live demonstrations. In August, Morningside holds a large festival often enjoyed by the entire family.
East of Morningside Nature Center is Newnans Lake. A popular waterway for anglers and naturists, the lake provides excellent bank fishing spots; wildlife is abundant. Newnans Lake is a popular area to see native Florida alligators and various birds. North of the lake, residents enjoy hiking and other outdoor activities at Newnans Lake Conservation Area.
