Porters Community has been referred to as Porter’s Quarters or Subdivision throughout its history. Believed to be named for Dr. Watson Porter and his wife Olivia A. Porter, the Porters Community has its roots going back to the late 1800s – one of the earliest neighborhoods in Gainesville.
The emergence of the university had an important factor on Porters Community. New neighborhoods developed around the University of Florida which drew populations farther west. While people moving into Gainesville overlooked Porters Community for many years, it has started to get a second look especially since the city has started to invest in its renovation with newly constructed homes.
Approximately 1.5 miles to the south of Porters Community begins the border of several conservation areas and reserves. Longleaf Flatwood Reserves provides over 1,300 acres of natural Florida habitat with a variety of plant and animal species. About two miles to the east is Morningside Nature Center which hosts a working farm run as it would have been in the late 1800s. To the east of Morningside is Newnans Lake where residents can fish or visit the Newnans Lake Conservation Area.
With Downtown Gainesville only minutes to the north, residents of Porters Community can enjoy a variety of entertainment options. Popular attractions near Downtown include Hippodrome State Theatre and Bo Diddley Community Plaza. Spectators can take advantage of free music offered by local talent at the community plaza or utilize the farmers’ market offered every Wednesday.
