Northeast 10th Avenue is the northern border of Northeast Neighbors. West University Avenue is its southern border. Northeast Waldo Road serves as its eastern border, while Northeast 9th Street is its western border.

Approximately half of the homes in the community are single-family, detached units of many diverse styles, such as ranch and Mediterranean houses. About five percent of the housing units are mobile homes or trailers.

Morningside Nature Center is two miles east of Northeast Neighbors. It combines a living farm with a nature preserve center. It boast fire-dependent, long leaf pine woodlands and over seven miles of multiple-use trails. Wildflowers, cypress domes, and sandhill trees are plentiful. Ocala National Forest and Goethe State Forest are also nearby.

Cultural attractions are plentiful in the area. The Hippodrome State Theatre and Randy Batista Photography and Gallery are both just under a mile to the southwest. Thomas Center Galleries is a half mile to its west. Matheson Museum, Alachua Country Historic Trust and Gainesville Cotton Club are a half mile away.

Northeast Neighbors is a college-friendly community. The University of Florida is about a mile to its southeast. Santa Fe Community College is a half mile to its west, and the Institute of Black Culture is two miles to its west.

Several of the more well-to-do Northeast Neighbors residents belong to the Gainesville Country Club, which is about six miles southwest of the community. It lies on the Paynes Prairie State Preserve, which has 260 bird species on its 20,000 acres. The country club has an 18-hole, championship golf course, tennis court, aquatic center, clubhouse and on-site dining.
