Hazel Heights is a large neighborhood located about two miles north of Downtown Gainesville, Florida. Hazel Heights is a residential area with a high concentration of single-family homes surrounded by numerous oak trees. The neighborhood is encompassed by Northwest 39th Avenue to the south, Northwest 24th Boulevard to the west, Northwest 13th Street to the east and just north of Hazel Heights are various other neighborhoods including Rainbows End and Rainbows East. The main thoroughfare to the north is Northwest 53rd Avenue.
Situated in the 32605 ZIP code area of Alachua County, Hazel Heights is close to several area public schools. C.W. Norton Elementary is approximately half a mile north in the Rainbows End neighborhood. To the south are Howard W. Bishop Middle, and Gainesville High School.
Just a mile north of Hazel Heights is Northside Park. This is the only public park in Gainesville that offers a disc golf course. Also available at Northside Park are tennis and racquetball courts, a playground, and picnic areas.
Hazel Heights is located about three miles north of the University of Florida and east of Gainesville Regional Airport. Just southeast, closer to Hazel Heights is Northside Shopping Center. This area offers various shopping and dining venues. Farther south and closer to the university are various rental options including Glen Springs Apartments, Misty Oaks Apartments, and Cobblestone Apartments.
A popular place for visiting in the area is Morningside Nature Center. Located about four miles southeast of Hazel Heights, Morningside Nature Center combines entertainment with education. This facility hosts a nature center but is also a living farm which can be seen by visitors. The center demonstrates what life was like on a Florida farm during 1870. Morningside also hosts a large festival in August.
Also popular with residents in the Hazel Heights area is Newnans Lake. This kidney-shaped waterway is teaming with Florida wildlife including alligators, eagles, and otters. Anglers can bring a pole and fish for largemouth bass and catfish. Other activities available at Newnans Lake include boating, canoeing, seasonal hunting, bird watching, and camping.
