Monterey Heights is a small residential area in the southwestern part of San Francisco. It sits on the southern slope of the city’s highest hill. It is bounded by Santa Paula Avenue on the north, Yerba Buena Avenue on the east, Monterey Boulevard on the south, and San Andreas Way on the west.

Monterey Heights is an upscale, family-oriented neighborhood with many large detached houses and tree-lined, curving streets. Many of the homes were built in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. The neighborhood is less densely populated than most of the city and has more of a quiet, suburban feel.

While Monterey Heights is strictly residential, it is close to the charming West Portal shopping district, which has stores, restaurants, coffee shops, bars, a post office branch, and a movie theater. Many of the stores and restaurants are family-owned, which gives West Portal a friendly, small-town atmosphere.

The two nearest library branches to Monterey Heights are the West Portal branch and the Parkside branch. Both were recently renovated.

Nearby Mount Davidson Park is the highest point in San Francisco and contains a giant landmark cross visible from many parts of the city. A scene in the movie Dirty Harry was filmed there. From the park’s trails, the city and the Bay are visible below.

The neighborhood is also near City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State University. The Muni 23 line runs east and west, and the 43 line runs north and south. The neighborhood is close to Highway 280, making it easy to drive south.
