Eastside is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Riverside. It’s almost entirely residential, except for University Avenue, the main commercial street. The land is mostly flat, unlike much of the surrounding area, which is hillier.

Eastside is adjacent to downtown Riverside. It is bounded on the north by 3rd Street, on the east by Chicago Avenue, on the south by Arroyo Drive, and on the west by the Riverside Freeway (Highway 91). The ZIP codes are 92506 and 92507.

Most of the homes in the neighborhood were built before 1950. The average listing price was approximately $195,000 in January 2011.

Eastside has three public schools — Lincoln Continuation School and two elementary schools. Longfellow Elementary School, a California Distinguished School, opened in 1890. Emerson Elementary School has a community garden and a program for the gifted and talented.

The neighborhood contains a Metrolink train station, five public parks, and a private country club with golf and tennis. Public park amenities include many sports fields, a pool, a skateboard park, picnic areas, and community centers. Riverside Marketplace provides shopping and entertainment.

The Eastside Library and “Cybrary” recently expanded into a much larger space. The technology-oriented Cybrary program has won many awards for its outstanding features and is being used as a model for similar programs across the country.

The Eastside neighborhood sprung up in 1887, after a canal was built to bring water in from the Santa Ana River.
