The Ward 5 neighborhood in Tucson is located on the city’s near south side and is bounded by Tucson Boulevard on the east, East Valencia Road on the south, Sixth Avenue on the west, and West Irvington Road on the north. The community is comprised primarily of a variety of smaller, ranch-style homes with an average selling price of $75,000.
Close to downtown Tucson, Ward 5 is also near the Santa Cruz River Park, which is just west of the city. The park runs along the now dry bed of the Santa Cruz River. The only time water flows in the ravine is when there is a heavy monsoon rain, which typically occurs in mid-summer. The park is home to a number of interesting species of birds too, including the desert roadrunner. The bird is seen somewhat frequently dashing across the walk and bike trails located in the park.
The area is also near Old Tucson Studios, a fun Western-themed attraction, which was the setting for a number of classic movies, including the western, “Gunfight at the OK Corral.” Vacationers and residents alike enjoy visiting the old western town in the park, which is supposed to depict Tucson in the late 1800s.
The Pima Air and Space Museum is in the Ward 5 neighborhood as well. The museum, which is located at 6000 East Valencia Road, is situated on 80 acres and houses 300 aircraft. Residents in the area and surrounding neighborhoods can volunteer in a number of ways, from giving tours and restoring exhibits to providing administrative support and greeting visitors to the flight museum.
