One of the wealthiest areas of Tucson is the Catalina Foothills, and the beautiful Villa Mesa neighborhood is right in the center of the Catalina Foothills. Although citizens here are more likely to keep to themselves than in some more civic-minded neighborhoods in Tucson, the Villa Mesa area is certainly not lacking in public funds to beautify the area.

The neighborhood is mostly residential, but quite a few businesses also exist. A number of higher-end retail storefronts dot the surrounding area, and more than a few of the best ethnic restaurants in Tucson lie across East River road on the south side of Villa Mesa. It isn’t uncommon to see residents from all over the city come through Villa Mesa just to sight-see and check out the stores.

The Tucson Country Club is just outside the Villa Mesa neighborhood limits. It is a popular gathering place for many Villa Mesa residents. The Fort Lowell Museum is also just beyond the border. It’s a great spot for newcomers to learn the history of the area.

In the late 1800s, Villa Mesa wasn’t more than a beautiful spot to picnic for the soldiers of nearby Fort Lowell. Countless wagon trains coming into and out of Tucson back then came right by Villa Mesa. It was known as the first landmark you could see before entering the city.

Just south of Villa Mesa is Mesquite Creek, another big attraction for residents all over the area. Fans of nature adore the unblemished portions that flow right beside Villa Mesa. In most parts of Tucson, running water of any kind is far too developed to be a big draw with naturalists, but Mesquite Creek continues to attract people from throughout Tucson.

It isn’t uncommon for neighborhood associations in surrounding areas to have people speak up in public meetings about how they can become more like Villa Mesa. Because of this, prices remain high in the neighborhood when compared to areas outside of the Catalina Foothills.
