Barrio Hollywood – bordered on the north by Speedway Boulevard, on the south by St. Mary’s Road, on the west by Silverbell, and on the east by the Santa Cruz River – is one of many historic neighborhoods in Tucson. The neighborhood was originally known as Riverside Park. Mexican families began moving there around 1920, and during the 1930s people started referring to the neighborhood as Barrio Hollywood because the residents thought that Hollywood celebrities resided there.
The old adobe-style homes in Barrio Hollywood are painted in various hues of blue, red, and yellow, and some are restored to their original beauty and splendor. Many old Tucson families live in Barrio Hollywood, and they have called this area home for over 100 years.
The annual Fiesta Grande Street Party attracts thousands of visitors each year to experience good food, shopping, and Mexican-style entertainment. The proceeds are used to fund scholarships for area students.
Pat’s Chile Dogs is a neighborhood favorite for residents and visitors alike. In the past, many teens would visit Pat’s before going down to 6th Avenue to cruise. Tucson soon passed an anti-cruising law, which forbade people passing by the same point within a three-hour period.
Parks near Barrio Hollywood include the Garden of Gethsemane Park, where visitors and residents can view a sculpture of the Last Supper and enjoy the grounds and gardens.
