The nearby wildlife refuge is an important protector of nature in one of Alabama’s fastest growing regions. A variety of habitat types, as well as wintering birds are seen here. Each winter it draws the state’s largest populations of migrating ducks and Canada geese. It is also shelters many native mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and songbirds, including at least 10 threatened or endangered species.
