The neighborhood is located in a random pocket of heavy forest adding a pleasant bit of scenery and canopy cover on the hot Alabama summer days. Since there is little commercial development in the immediate area, residents are able to go for a walk, a run or even a bike ride without the safety risks associated with busier neighborhoods. On the other side of the school is Fernbell Park, which complements the offerings of Whitesburg with tennis courts, basketball courts and more athletic fields.

Another major destination is off of Runway Road which is only about half a mile from Steelwood. This is where the Huntsville Tennis Center, Huntsville Running Park and Huntsville Municipal Golf Course can be found. With all of these offerings, residents always have a place to go for recreation and a change of scenery without ever leaving their own community.
