Durham at a Glance
Downtown Neighborhood
Downtown Durham wants you to “find your cool!” That will be very easy to do when you move to the vivacious neighborhood, which is filled with entertainment, shops, restaurants, and more. Durham hosts nearly 5,000 events per year, meaning you’ll always have something to do! Durham is home to the Museum of Life + Science, the Carolina Theatre, and the beautiful Little River Regional Park.
Of course, there’s more to Downtown Durham than great shopping, dining, and nightlife. This is a major part of the Research Triangle area, and it is home to the prestigious Duke University and North Carolina Central University. Durham is also home to several historic districts that serve as a reminder of this city’s rapid growth, thanks to the tobacco industry.
The American Tobacco Historic District is a fantastic district featuring 14 historic buildings built from 1874 to the 1950s. The Lucky Strike Building is located here – it was built in 1901. Other buildings include Hill Warehouse, built 1900; Washington Warehouse, built 1902; and the W.T. Blackwell and Company building, built in 1874. Other historic tobacco buildings in the area have been converted to apartment communities and lofts. Brightleaf Square, another historic tobacco district, features two warehoused built around 1904 in the Romanesque style.
While the tobacco industry is the past, tech is definitely the future. With its proximity to Research Triangle Park, Downtown Durham is near companies that include IBM, Quintiles, GlaxoSmithKline, RTI International, and more. And with Duke University located here, downtown is hopping – in addition to a variety of shops and restaurants, be sure to visit the Nasher Museum of Art, or head to Cameron Indoor Stadium to cheer on Duke University’s basketball team.
As a neighborhood heavily influenced by college students, Downtown Durham is very pedestrian-friendly. The Bull City Connector is a fare-free mass transit system that takes riders from Duke to the Golden Belt and includes Ninth Street and Downtown Durham.
