The Washington Navy Yard is a National Historic Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As the oldest on-shore Navy facility, the Yard serves as an administrative center and a ceremonial location. It is home to the Chief of Naval Operations and the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command, the US Navy Band, the Marine Corps Institute, and several other organizations. The Navy Yard was built in 1799 under the first Secretary of the Navy, Benjamin Stoddert.
