Powder House Square Neighborhood
Powder House Square is a bustling neighborhood with a landmark traffic circle and an impressive collection of turn-of-the century homes and modern condominiums. Referred to by locals as Powder House Circle, this historic community area holds a rich history. The neighborhood is named after an 18th century powder house that still stands, overlooking the traffic circle and Nathan Tufts Park. During the Revolutionary War, British troops attempted to seize gunpowder from the house, but were foiled in their attempts by local citizens.
Home styles in the Powder House Square area include Victorian, Queen Anne, and Colonial. Many homes date back to the late 1880s and early 1900s, but even new condominium complexes are designed to blend into the existing historic architecture.
Powder House Square encompasses zip code 02144. The traffic rotary is composed of a 6-way intersection of College Avenue, Broadway Road, Warner Street, and Powder House Boulevard. The community is bounded by Boston Avenue to the east, Somerville Avenue to the south, Elm Street and Davis Square to the west, and Harvard Street and Broadway Road to the north.
Much of Powder House Square is residential, except for the rotary area, which is home to a number of restaurants and shops. In a circular island at the center of the rotary is a small park with benches and vegetation.
Of the many appealing aspects of Powder House Square is the area’s proximity to Nathan Tufts Park, which sits on the northern edge of the neighborhood. On the National Register of Historic Places, this park was named in honor of the Tufts family, founders of Tufts University. The park is located on the same site as the historic powder house building, and includes walking paths, benches, trees, and naturalistic landscaping.
