Davis Square Neighborhood
Davis Square in Somerville has everything one needs for a pleasant afternoon in an urban plaza without all the hassle of going into Boston. Here residents find comfort food, coffee shops, small boutiques, a movie theater, a butcher, restaurants, street musicians, bars, and an aesthetic that’s young and hip.
Easy enough to get to from Massachusetts Avenue or on foot, Davis Square is close enough to everything Boston. Metered parking spaces are usually available, and more athletic types can arrive via the Somerville Community Path.
In the afternoon, college students and young professionals enjoy gourmet coffee in the post-modern-looking Diesel Café. It’s possible to go shopping for ironic tee shirts at Magpie and then hop across the street and pick up a unique, chic gift at Davis Squared.
For meat lovers, the neighborhood is a very special place. McKinnon’s butcher shop is a bit of an anachronism these days, since meat is mostly purchased at the supermarket. But there is no arguing with a thick Delmonico steak for $6. Beef lovers can also head over to Redbones, a legendary barbecue joint. The craft beer selection is as good as their six sauces. Caution: if you order the $10 mixed-ribs plate on the late night menu, you might need a friend with a wheelbarrow to cart you out afterward.
After a meal, residents can feed the birds at Seven Hills Park or take a walk along the Community Path. The Red Line is just next door when it’s time to leave.
Some consider Davis Square is a bit rough around the edges. Visitors are more likely to find a disgruntled philosopher than a lunching debutante. However, the food is plentiful, the shops are inventive, and the resident dingy movie theater still serves beer.
