Fairfield County, Connecticut

Residents of Fairfield County boast that their location is where “New York City meets New England Charm.” Located along Connecticut’s Gold Coast, Fairfield County offers the high-rise hotels, striking architecture and vibrant shopping areas of an exciting urban destination. Yet its romantic country inns, sweeping countryside and breathtaking water views will also beckon visitors to a more rural, New England experience.

Located in the southwestern corner of Connecticut, Fairfield County’s population numbered 916,829 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous county in the state, and contains four of Connecticut’s largest cities: Bridgeport, Stamford, Norwalk and Danbury. Fairfield is one of the highest-income counties in the nation, and Connecticut one of its most affluent states.

Fairfield County enjoys four distinct seasons. Spring brings numerous Dogwood Festivals, and residents begin canoeing and kayaking on Long Island Sound to observe its many species of birds. In summer, the county’s thirty miles of coastline and sandy beaches entice boaters, beachcombers and fishermen to explore the Sound.

September through late October the days are clear and sunny, and evenings are cool. Harvest season culminates in major events such as Norwalk’s famous Oyster Festival. Winters are usually mild along the southwest coast of Connecticut, but when it snows it transforms Fairfield County into a winter wonderland. Unique experiences await visitors, any time of year.

Located in an historic landmark 19th-century stone carriage house, the Center for Contemporary Printmaking is dedicated to the art of the print: intaglio, lithography, monotype, silkscreen, woodblock printing, paper works, book arts, and digital arts.

At Fairfield County Farmers’ Markets, shoppers can find 76 kinds of heirloom tomatoes, dozens of varieties of herbs and handmade milk soap from organically-fed goats at the following Saturday markets:

  • Fairfield – Brick Walk Farmers’ Market, Post Road behind Trek bike store, May through October
  • Fairfield, Greenfield Hills, Bronson Road, early June through October
  • Greenwich, Arch Street and Horseneck parking lot, May through mid-November
