Church Hill Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
There are few communities in the United States that have as much historical significance as Church Hill in Richmond, Virginia. A registered historic district, the neighborhood encompasses the original land plot of the city of Richmond. It hosts significant historic sites from the pre-revolutionary era through the Civil War.
Also known as the St. John’s Church Historic District, Church Hill is the eastern terminus of Broad Street, a major east-west thoroughfare in the Richmond metro area. Its name, Church Hill, is often used to describe this specific historic district as well as the larger general area in the East End hosting other neighborhoods such as Union Hill and Chimborazo.
The neighborhood’s namesake, St. John’s Episcopal Church, is the oldest church in Richmond, built in 1741. It was the site of two important conventions in the period leading to the American Revolutionary War, and is most famous as the location where Patrick Henry said, “Give me liberty or give me death.”
Another important historic site in Church Hill is Chimborazo Park. The park was created on the former site of Chimborazo Hospital, the largest and most famous medical facility in the South during the Civil War. The hospital achieved a mortality rate of approximately nine percent; few hospitals in the Confederacy had lower mortality rates. The hospital’s success is attributed to a combination of its open-air, pavilion-style design; the comparatively good quality of care; innovative practices; and the supreme dedication of the caregivers. One of the great advancements these caregivers achieved was public acceptance of hospital care for the sick and injured – a concept not embraced in America prior to 1865.
Located on East Broad Street, the 30-acre park is also home to the National Battlefield Park headquarters and a miniature of the Statue of Liberty. The park house on the eastern edge of the park can be rented for events, and the popular Church Hill Dog Park is located on the eastern lower terrace of the park.
