Texarkana, TX Apartments for Rent

Texarkana’s motto is “Twice as Nice.” Since you are getting two great states in one, it is definitely unique! In fact, there’s no place quite like Texarkana – the city is divided in half, with one side belonging to Texas and the other to Arkansas. The name “Texarkana” also includes another nearby state – Louisiana – which is about 30 miles south. So, how did this one-of-a-kind city end up in two different states?

In the late 1800s, the Texas and Pacific railroads converged in the area that is now Texarkana. It seemed like a great place for a city, so the railroads began to sell lots. A small village formed along the border and it grew rapidly into an agricultural hub. Since the village spilled across state lines, and was so close to a third, it was named to reflect that.

Travel down State Line Avenue, which runs north-south along the Texas-Arkansas state line, and you can literally be in two places at once. The Post Office and the Federal Building is located on a traffic island between the two states, with half the building in Texas and the other half in Arkansas.

With two states to choose from for recreation, nightlife, and shopping, living in a Texarkana apartment really is “twice as nice!”

Things to Do in Texarkana:

Wright Patman Lake, a beautiful, large lake just southwest of the city, is ringed by nine major parks. The parks are perfect for outdoor adventures, including camping, boating, swimming, fishing, and hiking. Other area lakes include Millwood Lake, located in the southwest corner of Arkansas along the Red River. This park features some of the best fishing in the US, camping, and birding. Spring Lake Park wraps around a spring-fed lake. It features a walking and biking trail, a five-acre event area, disc golf, fishing piers, sports fields, and the Swanger Sports Complex.

Events in Texarkana include the annual Four States Fair and Rodeo and the Miss Texarkana Pageant. If you’re a history buff, you’ll love visiting the Museum of Regional History in Texarkana, as well as the Draughon-Moore Ace of Clubs House, a National Historic Landmark that is shaped like a club. For a day of fun, take the family to the Discovery Place Children’s Museum, where children can learn through interactive exhibits.

Ask anyone in Texarkana where to go to see a theater production and they’ll all agree – the Perot Theatre! Located downtown, the Perot Theatre is a historic landmark that opened in 1924 as the “Gateway to the Southwest” theatre. Around 1979, the theatre was fully restored, thanks to Texarkana native Ross Perot, who contributed most of the funds for the restoration in memory of his parents. Today the theater hosts plays, special performances, and the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra.

The Tex-Ark Antique Auto Museum in downtown Texarkana, Arkansas includes over 20 vehicles representing at least four decades of automobile manufacturing. Texarkana, Texas also has an historic downtown area, where you’ll find unique shops and fine dining. For recreation, there are numerous city parks, as well as the top-rated Texarkana Golf Ranch, an 18-hole course designed by Jim Fazio.

What to Consider When Moving to Texarkana:

Straddling the boundary between two states, Texarkana exists as two different municipalities with two city governments, mayors, and police departments. The Texarkana metropolitan area is one of the fastest growing small metropolitan areas in the country.

Texarkana is part of an interesting area known as the Ark-La-Tex region – the place where four states intersect: Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. This region is known for its bayous and its Piney Woods, coniferous forests featuring pine and hardwood trees. Culturally, the area is famous for its unique blend of country, jazz, and blues music.

Red River Army Depot is Texarkana’s single largest employer, employing more than 7,200 residents of the area. Excellent opportunities exist with other top employers, including Christus St. Michael Health Care, Cooper Tire and Rubber Company, Domtar, Walmart, and International Paper. There are also many opportunities for those looking for positions at educational institutions: the Texarkana Independent School District and Texarkana Arkansas School District are both major area employers, each employing almost 800 area residents. College students renting apartments in Texarkana enjoy convenient commutes to Texarkana College and Texas A&M University at Texarkana.
