Ideally located 30 miles south of Austin and roughly an hour northeast of San Antonio, Lockhart is a small but busy city. It is the county seat of Caldwell County, it is a popular filming location, and (perhaps most importantly to those considering renting an apartment in Lockhart) it is the official Barbecue Capitol of Texas.

The barbecue is so great here that magazines and television shows often feature the local restaurants. Travel Channel’s BBQ Paradise featured Kreuz Market, considered one of the top 5 barbecue restaurants in Texas. Kreuz has been in operation since 1900 and is a German-style barbecue restaurant.

Smitty’s Market is another barbecue restaurant on the Texas top five – it is actually located in the old Kreuz Market. Edgar Schmidt purchased the old market from the Kreuz family in 1948.

Blacks Barbeque is world-famous. Established in 1932, this restaurant has been featured in Texas Monthly, Bon Appetite, Gourmet Magazine, and the New York Times, and was requested by President Lyndon Johnson in the 1960s to represent Texas barbecue at the Smithsonian Institute.

With three powerhouse barbecue restaurants in the same city, Floyd Wilhelm decided to add a fourth. In 1978, he opened Chisholm Trail Barbeque and the restaurant is packed on a daily basis. As the youngster on the block, this cafeteria-style restaurant is just one more reason people travel from all over to dine in Lockhart.

After eating all that barbecue, take a stroll through historic downtown Lockhart and discover why this is such a popular filming location. Charming and beautiful, the downtown area is filled with antique stores, boutiques, and other shops, making it an ideal destination on sunny afternoons.

Lockhart State Park is a beautiful destination for outdoor adventures. Located on Clear Fork Creek and complete with a golf course, a swimming pool, a campground, and a hilltop refectory, visitors to the park enjoy fishing, camping, hiking, picnicking, and golfing.
