Second Ward Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
Upon the founding of Houston, Texas, four original wards were established, one of which is now called Second Ward. This area encompasses a few zips, but has its foundation in the 77011 code to the southeast of the city, north of Interstate 45 and south of Interstate 10. It is within Loop 610, the innermost city loop, making it part of “inner” Houston.
The Second Ward is rich in local tradition, culture, and history. The area features ample talent from artists, specifically through venues such as the Talento Bilingue de Houston (“Bilingual Talent of Houston”), a Latino performing arts center, and the Frenetic Theater. It was once one of the most affluent of Houston’s neighborhoods, and many buildings, with their their 1920s art-deco styling, are reminiscent of this era.
Today, the Second Ward is home to numerous industrial buildings (on the north side) and working-class neighborhoods. The area is served by the Houston Independent School District, which includes Austin High School, Jackson Middle School, and the private Our Lady of Guadalupe School. Nearby is the Houston Public Library Flores Branch.
There has been a fair amount of attention spent in recent years toward revitalization efforts in the community. The area attracts new residents because of its close proximity to downtown Houston and access to everything one could possibly need.
For those seeking a piece of the exciting central Houston, the Second Ward fits the bill. It is affordable, close-knit, and constantly growing. With its abundance of artistic talent and cultural heritage, this ward solidifies its place as a valuable member of the greater Houston area.
