Known for legendary music and world-famous barbecue, North Memphis shares the city’s rich cultural heritage. One of five districts, North Memphis includes much of the area known as Uptown.

Roughly located south of I-40, the area is also north of I-40 as the east/west route angles into the north/south route shared with 69/240/I-40. It includes several smaller neighborhoods including Hollywood, New Chicago, Hyde Park, Smokey City, Douglass, Binghampton, and Frayser, the largest geographic community in North Memphis.
The area is served by the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) public transportation. In addition to buses, MATA operates trolley cars designed with a vintage style to reflect the Southern charm of the city.
North Memphis house hunters will find a wide range of housing styles. Single-family homes and all types of multi-family properties are available. Most of the neighborhoods provide mature trees, neighborhoods parks, and a host of shopping and eating choices.
The world famous St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is situated just north of I-40 as it curves to the west. Founded by entertainer Danny Thomas in 1962, the facility serves all children with cancer regardless of ability to pay. It is rated as the best research and treatment center for pediatric cancer by several top magazines. Most of the hospital’s funding comes from donations.
Visitors and local residents enjoy going to Mud Island River Park, set along the winding banks of the Mississippi River. Interactive educational activities, the Mississippi River Museum, combined with trails, boating, and a monorail train captures the interests of guests. Admission to the park is free but some activities require an entrance fee.
