Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls, SD Apartments for Rent

On the prairie of the Great Plains and the banks of the Big Sioux River, Sioux Falls is home to not only 165,000 people, but a gorgeous landscape as well. On the east coast of South Dakota, this is the largest city in the state and the 47th fastest-growing city in the U.S. Known as the “Best Little City in America,” Sioux Falls is 73.47 square miles of city that shouldn’t be overlooked.

The Big Sioux River is now and has always been a major defining factor for the city. The falls were created during the last ice age and drew many Native American tribes to the area and became an agricultural society. French and European explorers began journeying to the area in the early 18th century. In the following years, land was claimed by two different parties and conflicts ensued between the explorers and the natives.

The Village of Sioux Falls was incorporated in 1876 and in 1883 it was granted a city charter by the Dakota Territorial legislature. Due to the use of railroads, the population of Sioux Falls skyrocketed by the end of the 1880s, transforming the city. Several years of nationwide depression impacted the city, but it was able to recover with the completion of the interstate highways, the establishment of an airbase, and the opening of a large meat packing plant. Sioux Falls has again grown at a rapid rate since the late 1970s.
