Murfreesboro is in the heart of Tennessee – in fact, it is the geographic center of the state, and a monument marks the official center on Old Lascassas Pike. Middle Tennessee State University was founded in 1911. This public university offers more than 80 degree programs, but the university is most famous for its programs in aerospace and music. It is also a research university, with partners that include Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Marine Corps, and the US Army. MTSU ranks as one of the best public universities in the country. You’ll see plenty of blue and white when you move to Murfreesboro – especially during football season! The Blue Raiders participate in NCAA Division I as part of the Conference USA.

Murfreesboro is also home to several museums, including the Oaklands Historic House Museum, which was built around 1818. The Italianate-style mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and played a major role during the Civil War, housing both Confederate and Union armies. The Stones River National Battlefield is just outside of Murfreesboro. This is the site of a key Civil War battle that ended with a major Union victory in 1863.
