In 1777, the Continental Army, led by George Washington, established a winter encampment at Valley Forge. The Valley Forge National Park is located partly in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The park extends into Chester County.

Montgomery County is located along the Schuylkill River in the Delaware Valley, northwest of Philadelphia.
