In 1777, the Continental Army, led by George Washington, established a winter encampment at Valley Forge. The Valley Forge National Park is located partly in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The park extends into Chester County.

American history weaves through Montgomery County through its nearly 150 historic sites. The county dates to 1784, when it was carved from Philadelphia County. Montgomery County is located along the Schuylkill River in the Delaware Valley, northwest of Philadelphia. It is considered a suburban county with many residents commuting into Philadelphia to work; however, there are many businesses located in the county and several major business parks.

Montgomery County is home to many colleges and universities. Bryn Mawr College is a women’s liberal arts college that was founded by Quakers in 1885. The private college is a National Historic District. Other schools include Haverford College, Penn State Abington, Rosemont College, and Temple University.
