In 1705, a hatter arrived to rural Pennsylvania from England and built a home that later became an inn and tavern called the Crooked Billet Inn. He was popular for both his inn and his hats, and in 1740 the name of the town was changed to Hatborough, which evolved over time into Hatboro.
Hatboro, Pennsylvania is located about 19 miles northeast of King of Prussia and about 19 miles north of Philadelphia. The town’s history is fascinating; this is where the Battle of Crooked Billet was fought in 1778 – a Revolutionary War battle where the British forces surprised three regiments of the Pennsylvania militia while they were sleeping, forcing the American troops to retreat into Bucks County. A monument located on the site of the Crooked Billet Tavern marks the spot of the battle.
George Washington once dined at Crooked Billet Tavern and he purchased grain from a grist mill that is now the Old Mill Inn. And John Dawson – the hatter from England – supposedly made the hats for the American soldiers. Historic sites in Hatboro include the John Harrison House, built in 1742; the Union Library of Hatboro, founded in 1755 and built in 1850; the Grist Mill, built in 1724; the John Gilbert House, built in 1749; and the Crooked Billet Inn, built in 1705 (the building is no longer standing; it was torn down in 1955).
