Erie, PA Apartments for Rent

Its nickname is Gem City, and it is surrounded by water. If you love being near the water, then Erie is the perfect location for your next apartment!  Erie is located in the northwestern corner of Pennsylvania along the shores of Lake Erie. With that perfect blend of beautiful landscape, vibrant economy, and a picture-perfect downtown, you can’t go wrong renting an apartment in Erie!

In 1785, a tract of unclaimed land along Lake Erie caused a heated dispute between Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. They all insisted this unclaimed land should belong to them. The disputed area was referred to as the Erie Triangle. The young federal government stepped in and the states backed off. Eventually, through some purchases and agreements, the land went to Pennsylvania.

Today, this stretch of land sometimes referred to as the “chimney” of Pennsylvania is where Erie is located. Erie is Pennsylvania’s only lake port city and is a manufacturing hub for the state. It is home to four major plastic companies.

Things to Do in Erie:

Waldameer Park and Water World is one of the best places to go with family and friends. Ride crazy, big, and attractive coastal rides. Waldameer Park was built in 1896, making it Pennsylvania’s fourth-oldest amusement park and one of the ten oldest in the US. The park, which is admission-free, also includes picnic areas and a midway. It is open seasonally from May through September.

The Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park and Resort always satisfies the urge to get splashed! Besides the water fun they offer, this park also features tree top rope courses, arcades, hot tubs, and a kiddie area. They have everything you ever wanted — that includes sleep! The park is connected to three hotels, so you can go ahead and make this your favorite “staycation.”

The Erie Zoo and Botanical Gardens is home to 400 animals and is located on 15 acres. These animals come from all over the world and include cheetahs, warthogs, and rhinos. In addition to the animals, the zoo features a train, a carousel, and more than 600 plant species. The gardens include a butterfly garden and a greenhouse.

With its location along Lake Erie, the city of Erie is home to some fantastic stretches of beaches. Between the shores of Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay is Presque Isle State Park. The endless activities will have you exhausted! Before doing anything, visit the Tome Ridge Environmental Center (TREC). This facility will help you get familiar with the 3,200 acres of land this park covers. Talk about huge! The TREC includes the Big Screen — a four-story-high, 45-foot-wide theater!

On Presque Isle, you can venture out on foot, by wheels, segways, surreys, skis, pontoons, or kayaks! Presque Isle is a 3,200-acre peninsula with a stunning coastline. Presque Isle State Park is the only “seashore” available in the state. During the summer, you’ll enjoy stretching out on the sandy beaches – there are 11 miles of beach to choose from. In the winter, the park draws those who enjoy snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing. And, of course, there’s always ice fishing!

The stars are always on stage at the Erie Playhouse. This is one of the oldest and largest community theatres in the nation! They accommodate youth with their youtheatre and special performances are offered year-round.

On with the show! All Act Theatre provides a cozy, intimate setting for enjoying theater productions. This could be the ideal “date night” location!

If you have kids, they will love going to the ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum. The ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum is a place that has been inspiring creativity and imagination in children for twenty years! The museum is a non-profit organization located in the historic cultural district of Downtown Erie. Math, science, art, culture, literacy, and health – name it, and the ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum has it!

Erie contains some beautiful historic locations that highlight its fascinating past. Land Lighthouse, built in 1818, is the oldest land lighthouse on the Great Lakes. The area just offshore of Erie is often referred to as the lake’s graveyard due to the frequent shipwrecks during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Battle of Lake Erie, which took place during the War of 1812, was also waged in the waters off the coast of Erie.

What to Consider When Moving to Erie:

People love Erie because no matter the season, there is always something to do. There’s always something happening downtown, from entertainment to cultural venues to festivals and events.

If you are a shopaholic, no worries — Erie has a lenient sales tax on clothing. So go ahead and satisfy that need to shop ‘til you drop!
