Located approximately between NW 16th Street, NW 23rd Street, Pennsylvania Avenue and Classen Boulevard, the Gatewood neighborhood of Oklahoma City was developed in the 1920s as Oklahoma City University was established to the north. Gatewood is revitalizing rapidly as its commercial heart along 16th Street, the Plaza District, fills with theaters, artists and shops. The Lyric Theater, in particular, has brought a lot of locally produced theater to the neighborhood. Homes are being rehabilitated and are often occupied by young, creative professionals and students. Many unique architectural styles are present in Gatewood.

The major player to the north of Gatewood is Oklahoma City University, a private school with about 2,200 students. The university is well known for its dance and theater programs, with notable alumni including Tony- and Emmy-winner Kristen Chenoweth and three Miss Americas. Another highly regarded institution in this neighborhood is the Classen School of Advanced Studies, a magnet school in the Oklahoma City Public School System ranked as one of the top high schools in America. High school and university students have a large presence in the neighborhood. Several churches also dot the neighborhood.

As a streetcar suburb, Gatewood is fairly walkable. Its homes are densely built and two commercial strips with shops and restaurants are within walking distance. Most of Gatewood is served by sidewalks, unlike many neighborhoods in Oklahoma City. Gatewood’s easy access to uptown, midtown, and downtown Oklahoma City has made it a good candidate for revitalization, so the neighborhood has improved greatly from 2005 onward.
