The Edwards Community is a historically significant neighborhood that is also livable. Located in the northeast section of Oklahoma City, the Edwards Community is an attractive, tree-lined area of the city with plentiful local attractions. Restaurants, schools and shopping are all within walking distance, along with a major city park.

The boundaries of the Edwards Community are NE 10th Street to the south, NE 23rd Street to the north, Page Avenue to the west and Bryant Avenue to the east. It has a significant place in Oklahoma City’s resident history. It was built as part of the city’s post-war boom and was the first predominantly African-American subdivision constructed in Oklahoma City. The neighborhood was created by millionaire developer Walter J. Edwards, who saw a need for single-family housing for black servicemen who were utilizing GI Bill funding after their service in World War II.

The main location for outdoor recreation in the Edwards Community is Edwards Park, which takes up much of the southern portion of the neighborhood. The park’s most prominent feature is a man-made lake which was opened in 2007. Part of the city’s Close to Home urban fishing program, the Edwards Park Lake gives anglers a chance to catch channel catfish, bluegill sunfish, and largemouth bass. The park also has a baseball field and playground.

The area is served by Edwards Elementary, a kindergarten through sixth grade school which is part of the Oklahoma City School District and is located inside the neighborhood. Students can study and read at the Ralph Ellison library branch on the northeastern corner of the neighborhood.
