Crown Hts – Edgemere Hts Neighborhood

Overlooking the beautiful centerpiece of Crown Heights Park, this beautiful historic neighborhood is in great condition. The boundaries of the neighborhood are approximately Western Avenue on the west, 43rd Street on the north, Broadway on the east, and 36th Street on the south.

Despite the beginning of the Great Depression, Crown Heights was developed between 1930 and 1932 to make way for a rapidly growing upper class in Oklahoma City. The area was once known as “Pill Hill” because so many of its residents were wealthy medical professionals. Following the depression, demand picked back up and Edgemere Heights was developed in the pocket between Walker and Harvey Parkway during the 1940s.

Large, grassy lots and varied architectural style give the Crown Heights-Edgemere Heights area a quiet, charming lifestyle in central Oklahoma City. Tudor, Colonial, and Mission Style homes dominate Crown Heights, while the later Ranch Style is the norm in Edgemere Heights. The wide, landscaped medians are a beautiful feature of the main neighborhood streets.

The neighborhood is walkable despite the absence of sidewalks on most streets. Calm residential streets allow pedestrians and cyclists to share space with slow-moving vehicular traffic. Destinations for walkers are plentiful. Crown Heights is bordered by the Western Avenue District, which has many of Oklahoma City’s finest local shops and restaurants. In Edgemere Heights, the 50-year-old Jewel Box Theater is an inexpensive place for residents to gather Thursday through Sunday to view theatrical and musical productions. Places of worship and schools are also within walking and biking distance.

Crown Heights Park is the main attraction for the neighborhood. Bisected by a small, naturally landscaped creek, Crown Heights Park features large lawns and tall old trees. A modern playground area is very popular with neighborhood children. Two baseball diamonds are also available. The park and large private yards make the neighborhood a dog-friendly place as well, with many dog-walkers enjoying the sun on the lawns. This historic residential area is treasured by its residents as one of the nicest places to live in Oklahoma City.
