Capitol Hill Neighborhood

Don’t let its name fool you: the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Oklahoma City is nowhere near the capitol campus section of town which houses the statehouse and other government buildings. This neighborhood south of downtown was its own small city until it merged with Oklahoma City in 1911. Today, the area is a well-preserved historic district with plenty of interesting local shops, restaurants, and nightlife options on its main streets.

The borders of Capitol Hill include the Oklahoma River to the north, Grand Boulevard to the south, Western Avenue to the west and Shields Boulevard to the east. The majority of the businesses in Capitol Hill are located in the Central Capitol Hill section, which is in the middle of the neighborhood. The neighborhood became a “Main Street” area in 1997 and extensive renovation and renewal work since then has preserved the existing historic buildings and brought new businesses into the community.

The area’s Hispanic heritage is celebrated each October with the Fiestas de la Americas, which has been called the largest multicultural celebration in Oklahoma City. The event features bands, dancers, and arts and crafts displays along the streets of Capitol Hill.

Residents who want to explore the outdoors can hike part of the Oklahoma River Trails, which runs through Wiley Post Park on the north end of Capitol Hill. The river trail is paved on either side, letting people explore it while walking, bicycling, rollerblading, or skateboarding. With level grades, the trails are an easy way for residents to get some exercise while seeing native wildlife, flora and the beauty of the Oklahoma River.
