Coastal Carolina University is a public, sea-grant university located in Conway, roughly eight miles from Myrtle Beach. Waties Island, a 1,062-acre undeveloped barrier island, is under Coastal Carolina’s jurisdiction and is used as an educational research facility, providing an excellent natural laboratory for students of marine science and wetlands biology.

CCU enrolls about 8,300 students who can choose from the university’s 56 areas of study. The university also offers seven master’s degree programs in coastal marine and wetland studies, writing, education, and an MBA. Undergraduate programs include graphic design, musical theater, criminology, biochemistry, and theatre arts.

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers participate in NCAA Division I. The football team is part of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. The Chanticleer was a witty rooster from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale.” School colors are teal and bronze.
