University of Rhode Island Area Apartments for Rent(hide college information)
A gorgeous New England village filled with historical architecture dating to the 17th and 18th centuries – most of which is on the National Register of Historic Places – is a charming setting for a university, and Kingston – which dates back to 1722 – delivers all of the history and legends one would expect from a community that formed during colonial times.
Kingston is home to the University of Rhode Island, a tier one public research university. URI was established in 1892, but it began as an agricultural school in 1888. Before it was a school, it was Oliver Watson Farm, and the farmhouse, built sometime around 1796, is still located on campus and operates as a museum. The school offers more than 80 majors in 10 colleges, and it features highly respected nursing and engineering programs.
The Rhode Island Rams compete in NCAA Division I. The football team, part of the Colonial Athletic Association, plays at Meade Stadium, a 5,180-seat stadium that opened in 1928. The school colors are blue and white. There’s a total of 18 athletic teams at URI, including soccer, baseball, and basketball.
