Founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1749, the University of Pennsylvania is one of the oldest universities in the country and is a member of the Ivy League. It is a top research university and has been instrumental in several major scientific discoveries. Penn is highly selective and is considered one of the most selective universities in the country.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the University of Pennsylvania Campus contains such properties as Hayden Hall (1896), Furness Library, (1888), and the John Harrison Chemistry Lab (1886).
