Considered one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country, Swarthmore is also one of the earliest co-ed colleges. It was founded in 1864 by a group of Quakers that were active in the abolitionist and women’s rights movements. Today, Swarthmore is a private college that no longer has ties to a religious institution, but it still has a commitment to its Quaker heritage.

Swarthmore, along with Bryn Mawr and Haverford College, make up the Tri-College Consortium, a cooperative that allows students to cross-register for courses at each of the three schools. In 2013, Swarthmore was listed as the 3rd-best liberal arts college in the country by US News & World Report. Swarthmore has been in the US News listings’ top three every year and has been number one six times.

Scott Arboretum is a 357-acre arboretum located on the campus. The arboretum, which is free and open to the public, was established in 1929. It contains over 4,000 types of ornamental plants, the 200-acre Crum Woods complete with walking trails, and the Dean Bond rose Garden. Due to the beauty of the arboretum, Swarthmore is considered one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country.

Apartments near Swarthmore can be found in the borough of Swarthmore, which is a charming village filled with coffee shops, cafes, and book stores. A train station located on the edge of campus makes the 11-mile trip to Philadelphia quick and easy for those who want to live in the city. Other nearby communities include Rutledge, Morton, Ridley, and Swarthmorewood.
