The Evangelical Lutheran Church founded the Allentown Seminary in 1848. Eventually, the seminary became Muhlenberg College, named for Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, a man credited for founding the Lutheran Church in the United States after he immigrated to Philadelphia in 1742. The 81-acre campus is located on the west side of Allentown and offers several Associate and Bachelor’s degree programs.
The Muhlenberg Mules participate in NCAA Division III and has 22 sports teams. Football was the first varsity sport for the Mules – the football program dates back to 1900. Other sports teams include ice hockey, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, track and field, and wrestling.
Muhlenberg’s campus is adjacent to Cedar Creek Park, a popular park with a pool, a playground, a Rose Garden, and Cedar Beach. The Allentown Fairground Farmers Market is within walking distance from the campus. To find your apartment in the Muhlenberg College area, look in Allentown’s western neighborhoods, such as West Park, the West End Theatre District, Hamilton Park, Union Terrace, and Trexler Park.
