Located in the Appalachian Mountains of northeastern Ohio, Youngstown is the ninth-largest city in the state. It is roughly halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh with about an hour drive to each. Youngstown is a busy city with a charming Midwestern feel. The downtown area is filled with shops, restaurants, and several large businesses. But this is a college town, and the largest employer is Youngstown State University, a highly-regarded research university located downtown.

Rent an apartment in Youngstown near YSU and enjoy a pedestrian-friendly urban area with plenty to do – including nightlife, Powers Auditorium (home to the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra), museums, and beautiful historic districts filled with Victorian architecture.

YSU was established in 1908. Its 140-acre campus is urban, located on the north end of the downtown area. The university consists of seven schools, including the Beeghly College of Education, the College of Fine and Performing Arts, and the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Students can select from over 100 undergraduate majors, 35 masters programs, and several doctoral degrees.

The Youngstown State Penguins play in NCAA Division I and are most recognized for their football program, considered among the best in the country. The university has produced well over 20 NFL players, including Tony Aiello, Craig cotton, Vince Marrow, and Jeff Wilkins. The football team plays at Stambaugh Stadium, referred to as the “Ice Castle,” and their colors are red and white. Other Penguins sports teams include soccer, baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, track and field, and tennis.
