Located in the heart of Detroit, Wayne State University consists of an eclectic mix of 100 buildings spread over 200 acres in the Midtown Cultural Center Historic District, an area known for its galleries, theaters, and museums. The main corridor that runs from the university along Cass Avenue is a hip, artistic community and the location of the annual Dally in the Alley, a large community festival with art, live music and performances, and food vendors.

WSU was founded in 1868 and is the third-largest university in Michigan. The oldest building on campus is the Old Main Hall, built in 1896 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the location of the college of Liberal Arts and Sciences. WSU is a top-ranking research university and has the largest single-campus medical school in the country. The Wayne School of Medicine dates back to 1868.

Students enjoy a wide variety of sports at WSU, including tennis, baseball, basketball, swimming, golf, cross-country, fencing, and football. The WSU Warriors fencing program has won numerous National Championships. The football team plays in NCAA Division II and home games are held at Tom Adams Field.
