Perched atop a hill, elegant and historic buildings with red roofs are scattered among the trees. A panoramic view of a small Midwestern city flanked by blue sky is spread out below. Welcome to the University of Kansas, a top-ranking public research university located atop Mount Oread in Lawrence.
KU was established in 1865, making it the flagship university for the state. The large KU campus includes popular museums, such as the Spencer Museum of Arts and the University of Kansas Natural History Museum. Students at KU enjoy a stunning campus, and the beauty extends into the lovely town of Lawrence, which boasts a lively downtown famous for its art and music scene. They can reach the town using the Lawrence Transit (the T) bus system or KU’s own KU on Wheels. Both bus systems are free to KU students, faculty, and staff.
Not only is KU an influential university with many major discoveries and claims to fame, but it is also a major player in collegiate sports. With 18 varsity sports teams, the Kansas Jayhawks dominate most sports arenas, including football and basketball. The basketball team has won five National Championships and play at Allen Fieldhouse. Perhaps their most famous basketball star, Wilt Chamberlain, played for KU during the 1950s. The football team plays at Memorial Stadium and has played in the Orange Bowl several times. The sports program is in NCAA Division 1 and is part of the Big 12 Conference.
