Northern Illinois University, commonly called NIU, is a comprehensive teaching and research institution located 65 miles west of Chicago in DeKalb, Illinois. NIU was founded in 1895 as part of an expansion of teacher training.
Today’s NIU consists of more than 24,000 students and seven degree-granting colleges. The university also operates satellite centers in Hoffman Estates, Naperville, Oregon and Rockford.
The Rockford, Illinois center serves NIU’s College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. The city of Rockford, home to five major tier-one aerospace supply companies and a short distance from Boeing’s international headquarters, is a hub for aerospace manufacturing. In September of 2011, a collaboration between NIU, its satellite center and the city’s development team won a federal Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge grant totaling $2.4 million.
The grant will be used to accelerate job creation and innovation for small- to medium-sized aerospace companies in the region. The goal of the project is to grow the market for the Rockford area aerospace cluster to a national and international basis to meet the growing needs of the global aerospace industry.
US New and World Report consistently ranks many NIU programs among the best in the country, including its City Management and Urban Policy (third-best) and the Public Finance and Budgeting program (13th best). Washington Monthly ranks NIU as one of the top 100 research universities in the United States.
NIU is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a “high research activity” university, a designation reserved for universities that award at least 20 research degrees during the year.
