Situated in the 27614 zip code of Wake County, the neighborhood is bordered by Durham Road to the north, Falls of Neuse Road to the west, New Falls of Neuse Road at the south, and Capital Boulevard on the east. Waltonwood at Wakefield is only one of several Wakefield neighborhoods located in this area. Neighboring communities include Glen Stone at Wakefield Plantation, Middleton at Wakefield, and Savannah at Wakefield.

Residents can spend a recreational weekend at Falls Lake State Recreation Area. Located about 25 minutes to the northeast of Waltonwood at Wakefield, Falls Lake provides 26,000 acres to explore along with a 12,000-acre lake for fishing, boating, and swimming. Areas are provided for camping and trails for hiking and cycling. Extending from Falls Lake is the Neuse River. The river travels south and can be seen about 2 miles east of the Wakefield neighborhoods.

Waltonwood at Wakefield is far away from the hubbub of city life in Downtown Raleigh yet it is still surrounded by many shopping, dining, and entertainment locations. All within a mile-radius of the neighborhood are The Shoppes at Caveness Farms, Wakefield Commons, and Wakefield Crossing. Approximately 1.5 miles to the north is Capital Plaza. Situated between Wakefield Commons and Wakefield Crossing is Living Arts College @ School of Communication Arts.

To the east of the community, about a quarter mile, is Forest Pines Drive Elementary and to the north about a half-mile is North Forest Pines Elementary. Approximately one mile to the west are Wakefield Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.
