Raleigh, North Carolina’s south side neighborhood of Greenbriar is sandwiched between US 70 and Fayetteville Road. Greenbriar sits in the city’s 27603 zip code, north of Grovemont Road. It is a sprawling neighborhood, wooded with mostly residential structures.
Greenbriar is five miles from Raleigh’s Historic Yates Mill County Park. In addition to hiking and fishing, Yates Mill offers visitors tours through the working mill, built in 1756. As an environmental research center, the park has various public programs regarding conservation and the area’s cultural heritage.
North Carolina State University is about six miles north of Greenbriar. On the far west side of the university is the Carter Finley Stadium, home field of the Wolfpack football team. The university hosted its first football game in 1892. North Carolina State University is a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Sports Conference. Other points of interest on campus are the North Carolina State Fairground facilities and the J.C. Raulston Arboretum.
The Lonnie Poole Golf Course, on the Centennial Campus of the university is a public golf course, designed by Arnold Palmer and the Arnold Palmer Design Company. The course is the home site for the North Carolina State University men’s and women’s golf teams.
About five miles north of Greenbriar is Downtown Raleigh. Divided into five districts, the downtown area offers fine dining, shopping, entertainment and cultural and historical sites. On the north side of downtown is the Mordecai Historic Park. This historic district includes the Mordecai House and the birthplace of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States. Trolley Tours are also offered through the historic park area.
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Science is downtown also, south of the Mordecai Historic Park. General admission is free. The Museum features both permanent and traveling displays and programs for all ages.
