Guide to Jacksonville

Jacksonville Apartments For Rent

Located in the southeastern part of the state, Jacksonville NC is small city with a big time military presence. As home to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Air Station New River, you’re likely to see some camos around the city at some point.

Onslow County was established in 1731. After the county seat was destroyed by a hurricane, a new courthouse was built at Wantland’s Ferry in 1757. The town was finally incorporated and renamed Jacksonville in 1842, but the layout for the town was not done until 1849. Jacksonville relied on naval stores, lumber, and tobacco for its economy.

In 1939 there was a survey done of the area from Fort Monroe and Fort Sumter which included Onslow County. Two years later, present-day Camp Lejeune was established and forced 700 families to leave their land, with compensation of course. The development of this base caused a growth in population of about 800 and it continued to grow as young Marine families and retirees filled the area. The military continues to be the biggest population draw to Jacksonville.

Things to Do in Jacksonville:

A strong military presence doesn’t mean everything is rigid and strict. There are so many fun and relaxing things to do in Jacksonville. You can relax on the beach, play 18 holes of golf, tour the local museums and historical sites, eat delicious food and much more.

If you’re in the mood for some of Jacksonville’s attractions then start with a family-friendly visit to the Lynwood Park Zoo. Here you can see more than 80 animal exhibits and the various animals that reside there. Take an adult-only trip to Botticelli Vineyards and make your own wine from their variety of grapes. Visit the Beirut Memorial and the Lejeune Memorial Gardens and pay respects to all those named at the site that lost their lives for various causes.

Expand your knowledge through the various elements of culture and history in Jacksonville. The Montford Point Marine Museum has the largest collection of photos, artifacts, and more that preserve and teach the legacy of this group of African American Marines. Visit and stay for a little while at the United Services Organization (USO) of Jacksonville. Established in April 1942, this is the oldest USO in the U.S. and has been operating every day since. For a taste of art, see the exhibits and take classes at the Council for the Arts or get an original oil painting at World Art Gallery.

Jacksonville is located near the coast of North Carolina which means the outdoor activities are amazing and relaxing. For some fun in the sun and in the water, Onslow County Beach is clean and not overpopulated. This beach has four access points and access 3 is also great for surf fishing. Enjoy hours of boating at New River Waterfront Park or do some paddling at Oakhurst Nature Park. Go running, biking, or skating on the various trails in the city such as Jacksonville City to the Sea or Richlands Bicycle Loop. Play 18 holes of golf at Rock Creek Golf and Country Club.

Shopping and dining in Jacksonville is simple but satisfying. Combine both of these with a trip to the Jacksonville Mall as you browse through more than 70 stores and stop by the food court. Antiquing is easy with various places to shop like 2 Flipping Roosters, the Basement, and Carriage House Furniture that carry a wide variety of items. When it comes to dining, enjoy national chains as well as local eateries that specialize in seafood, steaks, ethnic cuisine, pizza, and more.

What to Consider When Moving to Jacksonville:

You’ve read up on all the things you can do here, but before moving to Jacksonville, there are a few more things to consider. Important facts to consider are the economy, the school system, the climate, the neighborhoods, and various other pieces of information.

The primary industries in Jacksonville are said to be retail and services. However, the top five employers are the U.S. Department of Defense, Onslow County Schools, Camp Lejeune, Onslow Memorial Hospital, and Onslow County. With the Marine Corps base located here, two of these employers should come as no surprise.

The heavy military presence also has a huge impact on the demographics of the city as well. According to the 2010 census, almost half of the population is from age 15 to 29 and the median age in 22.9.

If you are a teacher or have young children, you should be familiar with the Onslow County School System. The public school system has 21 elementary schools, eight middle schools, and eight high schools. There are also eight private high schools in Jacksonville as well.

Why Jacksonville Apartments Are Hot:

There is nothing hotter than Marines so by default, all Jacksonville apartments are hot by association. Aside from military, there is simply an easy going, peaceful atmosphere in Jacksonville. Whether you are a civilian or not, all of the amenities of the city are available for you to enjoy. Tour all the historic and cultural places throughout the city, take a trip to the beach after you get off work, go for a run or grab a meal with your family and friends at a local hotspot. Moving to Jacksonville will definitely present a new experience if you aren’t accustomed to living near a military base, but think of it as extra security.
