Jacksonville Apartments For Rent
Located in the southeastern part of the state, Jacksonville NC is small city with a big time military presence. As home to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Air Station New River, you’re likely to see some camos around the city at some point.
Onslow County was established in 1731. After the county seat was destroyed by a hurricane, a new courthouse was built at Wantland’s Ferry in 1757. The town was finally incorporated and renamed Jacksonville in 1842, but the layout for the town was not done until 1849. Jacksonville relied on naval stores, lumber, and tobacco for its economy.
In 1939 there was a survey done of the area from Fort Monroe and Fort Sumter which included Onslow County. Two years later, present-day Camp Lejeune was established and forced 700 families to leave their land, with compensation of course. The development of this base caused a growth in population of about 800 and it continued to grow as young Marine families and retirees filled the area. The military continues to be the biggest population draw to Jacksonville.
