Park Avenue is a residential community that lies halfway between the southern part of Asheville and Lake Julian. This community is made up of winding residential streets in a lightly populated part of town. Despite its quiet setting, it is close to some major points of interest for the city.
Park Avenue gets its name from a street making up its northern border. Cokesbury Lane is the southern border, while Lady Huntington Lane extends to the east. Major thoroughfare Sweeten Creek Road is also known as Highway 25,
The South College-Asheville campus is located across the highway from Park Avenue. This small college offers several associate programs, two bachelor’s programs and a host of certificate programs for those interested in furthering their education. Other schools in the area include the Academy of Asheville, an upscale, private school for children ages two through five, and the Cumbie Institute of Real Estate, a training program for aspiring realtors.
There is a large development of commercial businesses surrounding South College to the north and south of Park Avenue. To the south, shoppers can peruse stores like Pet Supplies Plus and get everyday merchandise at Kmart and Walmart. Restaurants in the area include casual eateries like Panera Bread, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, and Cici’s Pizza. For the health-conscious eater, Earth Fare Market and Cafe is a health food store with a small restaurant perfect for picking up ingredients for an at-home meal or grabbing something to go.
To the north, Carolina Cinemas features modern, full-length blockbusters. But it is also home to Actionfest every April. For those who enjoy graphic content in their films, Actionfest (named one of Moviemaker Magazine’s top movie festivals) is a weekend-long event featuring some of the best and most shocking action films. The tagline says it all — “The Film Festival with a Body Count.”
