Elmira, NY Apartments for Rent

As the birthplace or place of residence to some famous people, Elmira is an undiscovered gem. Located in the southern tier of New York, just a short distance from the Pennsylvania border, Elmira is a very small city in a very popular state. With an area total of 7.58 square miles and a population of less than 29,000, this is definitely not New York City.

Present-day Chemung County was established in 1788, shortly followed by the settlement of Newtown. In 1792, the settlement joined with two others to form the village of Newtown. The name was finally changed to the Town of Elmira in 1808. In 1864, a portion of the village and town of Elmira were incorporated to make the City of Elmira, while the rest of the town remained the Town of Elmira. During the 19th century, Elmira was a transportation hub for the southern tier as it connected various cities using the canal system and the railroads.

The population of the city hit its peak in 1950 with 49,716. However, due to the national reduction in railroads and manufacturing, along with the growth of suburbs, the population is down a significant amount. Regardless of the population size, Elmira certainly lives up to its slogan, “Honoring the Past, Building the Future.”

What to Consider When Moving to Elmira:

If you are moving to an apartment in Elmira from a large city then the size of the city itself is something to consider. Aside from the size, whether you are moving by yourself or with a family, there are always other things to consider when relocating. Key elements to consider when moving to Elmira are economy, climate, higher education, and events. When it comes to higher education in Elmira, there are three different institutions to consider – Elmira College, Elmira Business Institute, and the Arnot Ogden Medical Center.

Elmira College, established in 1855, is a private college sitting on 42 acres in Elmira. This is a notable institution, not just in Elmira, but in the country. Elmira College is actually the first extant institution in the U.S. to offer bachelor degrees to women that were held in equal regard to those offered to men. In 1969 the college was full coeducational.  Serving 1,170 students, Elmira College has more than 30 areas of study, all leading to either a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts.

Proudly wearing purple and gold, Elmira College is known by their Soaring Eagle mascot. The college is nationally recognized for its comprehensive Mark Twain archive, and as one of only two centers of Mark Twain Studies in the world. Mark Twain is famous for his novels “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” “A Connecticut Yankee in King Author’s Court,” and “Life on the Mississippi.” The college hosts an international conference on the State of Mark Twain Studies every four years.
