Cohoes, New York is a beautiful city nestled along the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. It has many claims to fame, including being the birthplace of legendary baseball player Gorge Davis. President Chester Arthur was a schoolmaster in Cohoes in the mid-1800s.
Cohoes is nicknamed “Spindle City” because of its history in textile production. Now the city is known for its charming shops, community activities and historic districts. Several of the buildings in the city are listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Harmony Mills Historic District, Cohoes Music Hall (a gorgeous restored Victorian opera house), and Lock 18 of the Erie Canal. The city’s most famous landmark is Cohoes Falls, a waterfall discovered by the Mohawk Nation.
Cohoes is convenient to New York State capital Albany, which is home to numerous festivals, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, theaters, education, fine dining, shopping, entertainment and employment opportunities in government jobs and “high tech” industries. Living in Cohoes, you’ll enjoy the historic downtown and the farmer’s market held every Friday on Remsen Street.
