Watchung is located about an hour north of Trenton and roughly 40 minutes west of New York City. It is an attractive, rural borough with green, rolling hills dotted with lakes and streams.
Although settled in the 1670s by the Dutch, Watchung wasn’t incorporated until 1926. The Watchung Mountains were utilized by George Washington to survey British troops during the Revolutionary War. Some of the area’s history is still reflected in the historical architecture throughout the county.
Today, Watchung is a pastoral suburban community with many residents taking advantage of the 40-minute commute into New York City for work, while enjoying the serene setting of Watchung. The borough is located in Somerset County, the wealthiest county in New Jersey and one of the wealthiest counties in the United States.
The community is home to several parks, an arts center, and Watchung Square Mall. The Watchung Garden Club meets monthly and is active in beautification projects, workshops, and other programs. Once you find your Watchung apartment to rent, you’ll enjoy a peaceful, rural community not far from the businesses, legendary nightlife, museums, shops, restaurants, and theaters of New York.
