South Plainfield Apartments for Rent

In the early 1660s, colonists purchased 500,000 acres of land west of Staten Island, New York in what became known as the “Elizabethtown Purchase.” On November 24, 1664, the first settlers arrived to the area and began to develop town plots. One of those original towns, Piscataway Township, included the present-day borough of South Plainfield.

Because of this long and fascinating history, South Plainfield has been witness to much of America’s history. The area was occupied by the British in 1776-77, and General George Washington had an encampment here, in the New Market section of Piscataway. During the early 1900s, industry began to develop, turning the farming community into an industrial one. Finally, in 1926, South Plainfield broke away from Piscataway Township and was officially incorporated.

South Plainfield is adjacent to Piscataway Township and Rutgers University-Busch Campus, roughly 18 miles west of Staten Island and about 40 miles northeast of Levittown, Pennsylvania. South Plainfield is a charming community with a rustic, historical downtown and beautiful tree-lined streets. It is a charming borough with a deceptively rural feel, considering those who rent apartments in South Plainfield are only about 30 miles from New York City.

Living up to the nickname, “The Garden State,” South Plainfield is near some beautiful parks. Spring Lake Park is a 121-acre park with four tennis courts, three basketball courts, biking and walking paths, a gazebo, a playground, and a five-acre fishing lake. Other nearby parks include Ponytail Park, Memorial Park, Putnam Park, and Cotton Street Park.
