Elizabeth, NJ Apartments for Rent

Elizabeth, New Jersey’s fourth largest city, is in the middle of it all: it is adjacent to Newark Liberty International Airport, it is a portside city, it is just six miles south of Newark, just 14 miles southwest of New York City, and across the river from Staten Island. It is home to Kean University and features about 46 gorgeous parks, including the popular Veteran’s Memorial Waterfront Park.

With a population well over 100,000, it might be surprising to discover that Elizabeth is one of the country’s greenest cities – the only New Jersey city on the list published by Popular Science magazine in 2008. In addition to being a green city, Elizabeth is very pedestrian-friendly and provides a comprehensive mass transit system.

Elizabeth was formed in 1665 by English colonists. It was part of the original Elizabethtown Tract, named for the wife of Vice Admiral Sir George Carteret. Downtown Elizabeth reflects the city’s history in its colonial-style architecture and historic sites.

Elizabeth Avenue is considered one of the country’s most historic streets. It served as a portal during the Revolutionary War, and a statue marks the area that served as the Continental Outpost in 1780. Stroll down the same streets walked on by early colonists, British troops, and Revolutionary War heroes. Visit the Market, a great shopping district filled with restaurants and locally-owned shops, then head over to the Peterstown Farmer’s Market for fresh produce and homemade goods.

Historic Boxwood Hall was built in the 1750s and was home to Elias Boudinot, president of the Continental Congress. Jonathan Dayton, the youngest signer of the Constitution, also lived in this house, which now serves as a museum and is open for tours. But although this house has stood for over 250 years, it isn’t the oldest house in Elizabeth – that honor goes to the Bonnell House, which was built somewhere between 1670 and 1682. The Belcher Ogden Mansion was built sometime in the late 17th century and was home of Royal Governor Johnathan Belcher, who lived there from 1751 to 1757.

As you look for an apartment to rent in Elizabeth, you’ll discover this charming city’s amazing neighborhoods, beautiful historic sites, wonderful festivals, and a plethora of things to do. Head into Manhattan to catch a Broadway show, or stay in Elizabeth and catch a production at the stunning Ritz Theatre, one of the oldest theaters in the state. It was built in 1865 as the Drake Opera House and was remodeled into an Art Deco masterpiece in 1925. Performers who have stood on the Ritz Theatre stage include George Burns, Ray Charles, Jack Benny, the Marx Brothers, Harry Chapin, and Rodney Dangerfield.

Have fun choosing an Elizabeth apartment to rent! With its amazing waterfront park and pier, its historic sites, fantastic shopping, wonderful restaurants, and unbeatable location, Elizabeth is a great city to call home.
