Located about 20 miles northeast of Trenton and 26 miles northeast of Levittown, Dayton is a community within South Brunswick Township. The area predates South Brunswick Township, which was incorporated in 1798. Long before that, Dayton was known as The Cross Roads due to its location; it was a popular resting place for travelers between Englishtown and Princeton. Catering to travelers, taverns began to appear in the area. The name wasn’t changed to Dayton until 1866.

Dayton is a charming community with tree-lined streets, wide sidewalks, and historical architecture. The oldest building in Dayton is the former Whitlock Tavern, which was built in the 1730s.
